About the Experience

Have you ever noticed the mood of a room before anyone spoke, or felt drained after an interaction without quite knowing why?

These experiences can invite us to pay closer attention to what we notice through our bodies, emotions, and surroundings. Within Qigong and the energetic arts, this exploration begins with awareness: learning to recognize subtle sensations and distinguish between them.

Introduction to Energetics, led by Dr. Mike Hall, DCEM, offers a grounded way to begin. Through guided exercises and discussion, you’ll explore how attention, breath, posture, and your environment influence your internal state.

What you'll explore

We begin with a traditional Qigong principle: “Where attention goes, qi follows.”

Using this as a starting point, you’ll practice directing your attention and noticing what changes. You may become aware of warmth, pressure, movement, tension, or other sensations. You’ll have time to explore your observations, ask questions, and learn through your own experience.

The class introduces three interconnected aspects of practice, as understood within these traditions:

  • The physical body: Breath, posture, temperature, tension, and direct bodily sensation.

  • The energetic body: Experiences described as flow, fullness, gathering, or openness.

  • The spirit body: Presence, stillness, clarity, and the quieter qualities of awareness.

These offer a framework for exploring your experience with greater attention and discernment.

What You’ll Practice

This is an experiential class, with guidance throughout. Practices may include:

  • Breath, posture, and grounding exercises.

  • Focused attention and body awareness.

  • Hand-sensing exercises to notice subtle sensations.

  • Partner exercises to observe your responses during interaction.

  • Grounding and clearing practices traditionally used for energetic hygiene.

  • Reflection, questions, and group discussion.

You’re not expected to feel a particular sensation or produce a specific result. The intention is to become more familiar with your own experience and build a foundation you can continue practicing.

Who This Class Is For

This class welcomes anyone curious about energy work, Qigong, or developing greater self-awareness.

It may be especially relevant if you spend your days caring for others, feel strongly affected by your surroundings, or find it difficult to settle after demanding interactions. Wellness practitioners, bodyworkers, counselors, nurses, caregivers, and highly sensitive people are welcome to explore practical ways to stay grounded and attentive to their own needs.

No previous experience is required.

Before you come in

A few things people ask.

Do I need experience with energy work or Qigong?

No. Introduction to Energetics is designed for beginners. You’ll be guided through each exercise, with time to ask questions and explore what you notice.

What will we do during the class?

You’ll explore breath, posture, body awareness, hand-sensing exercises, and partner practices. We’ll also introduce grounding and clearing techniques, with time for reflection and discussion.

What if I don’t feel anything during the exercises?

Everyone notices different things, and some sensations may be subtle or unfamiliar. There’s no particular experience you’re expected to have. The practice begins with paying attention, without forcing a result.

Is this class required before taking more advanced classes?

Yes. Introduction to Energetics is the prerequisite for Inner Arts: The Ten-Week Foundation and other advanced classes at the center. If you’ve already completed it, you’ve met this prerequisite.
